CBD (cannabidiol) is a plant compound derived from industrial hemp. CBD interacts with the body’s endocannabinoid system, which helps regulate stress and well-being, among other things. CBD does not cause a “high” or lead to dependence, and is very well tolerated by most dogs. What is CBD for dogs?
CBD stands for cannabidiol, a natural plant compound derived from the female hemp plant. Unlike THC, CBD has no intoxicating effect. In its2018 assessment report, the World Health Organization stated that CBD shows no potential for abuse or dependence. So your dog will neither get high nor become dependent on it.
For dogs, CBD is usually sold as an oil or a treat. However, there are also herbal blends and other CBD products. Legally, these products are classified asdietary supplements. How does CBD work in your dog's body?
Just like you, your dog has anendocannabinoid system (ECS). This is a complex network of receptors and the body’s own signaling molecules, known as cannabinoids. The most important receptors are called CB1 and CB2. They are found primarily in the nervous system and in cells of the immune system.
We like to call cannabinoids the“body’s police force.” They monitor the body’s balance and ramp up or ramp down processes when something gets out of whack—such as stress levels. CBD is a plant-based cannabinoid. It works through the same system and can thus naturally support the body’s police force.

Is CBD safe for dogs?

The dosage depends primarily on body weight. As a general guideline, we recommend approximately 0.5 to 1 mg of CBD per kilogram of body weight per day, divided into up to three doses. This helps keep CBD levels steady.

Three things from our practice that make all the difference:

- Adjust the dosage during stressful times.Once the baseline dosage is established, you can temporarily increase it to three or four times the usual amount on days like New Year's Eve.
- Plan breaks.We recommend taking a four- to five-day break about every three months to prevent the body's endocannabinoid system from becoming sluggish.

How do I give my dog CBD oil?
It's best to drip the oil directly onto your dog's lips. The body absorbs CBD well through the mouth's mucous membrane. Does your dog dislike the bitter taste of hemp?
