CBD in Physical Therapy for Dogs & Horses

When it comes to giving CBD to their pets , many pet owners usually think of anxious or panicked animals, or situations like New Year’s Eve or car rides. While CBD is certainly very effective for supporting mental well-being, it can also be extremely beneficial for the body and is therefore often used as a complementary treatment in physical therapy to increase mobility and improve flexibility.

This post highlights some fascinating case studies from Laura Wäbs of Zweitakt Tierphysio, who has been successfully using our nacani CBD products for several years now in her mobile physical therapy practice for dogs and horses, with positive feedback.

CBD – What exactly is it?

CBD stands for cannabidiol, a plant compound derived from the hemp plant (Cannabis). Unlike THC, the more well-known compound found in the hemp flower, CBD has no psychoactive effects, so it doesn’t get our four-legged friends “high.”

Good to know: Just like humans, our four-legged friends have their own endocannabinoid system (ECS). This system regulates various processes in the body and thus influences overall well-being. The ECS is one of the most extensive biological systems in the body and plays a key role in establishing and maintaining physical balance.

Case Study #1: Heat Cycle in Dogs

Bonnie, a two-year-old female Rottweiler, is experiencing issues during her heat cycle. In addition to the “normal” behavioral changes associated with being in heat—such as increased clinginess, a need for physical contact, and loss of appetite—she also exhibits lameness in her hind legs. This is particularly noticeable on the left side. She usually begins to limp during the second week of her heat cycle. It is also clearly visible that the dog’s back arches due to abdominal pain. Based purely on palpation, she has always been unremarkable. Joints and muscles can be moved through their full range of motion normally.

During estrus, muscles, tendons, and ligaments may be affected. They become softer and therefore more vulnerable. Why is that?

The external signs of estrus are regulated by various hormones, including estrogens. These are produced in the maturing egg cell in the ovary and are responsible for bleeding from the uterus, the thickening of the labia, and the production of a specific heat scent intended to attract male dogs. These factors have a strong effect on the connective tissue, causing it to soften.

How CBD Has Changed Bonnie's Life Through Physical Therapy

Bonnie receives CBD regularly according to our dosage recommendations. She weighs just under 45 kilograms and gets between 7 and 15 nacanis balls daily, each containing 3 mg of CBD. Since then, she has been noticeably more balanced, calmer, and seems mentally more relaxed. Overall, she appears more alert and eager to run. In addition, Bonnie has also received additional support through laser therapy and manual therapies such as massages.

Case Study #2: Chronic Laminitis in Horses

The 19-year-old Trakehner mare “Sternchen” has chronic laminitis. Laminitis is one of the most painful conditions a horse can suffer from. Essentially, it is an inflammation of the hoof corium, which connects the hoof bone to the hoof capsule. This has been well managed through diet and, in this case, medication for the underlying Cushing’s syndrome. Unfortunately, a recurrence must always be anticipated.

This case recurred from late July 2023 to early September 2023. Sudden severe lameness in the forelimbs and extreme pain upon palpation with hoof pliers. An X-ray was subsequently taken, confirming the recurrence of the change in the navicular bone. Weeks of box rest followed. Sternchen was additionally supported with special shoes. Laser therapy, lymphatic drainage, and manual therapy were also employed.

How CBD Has Changed Sternchen's Life Through Physical Therapy

Starting from the time the X-ray was taken, the mare was given CBD in oil form twice a day. Administering it twice a day helps maintain a consistent level, as CBD is metabolized by the body after about four to six hours.

The weeks-long stall rest took a heavy toll not only on her hooves but also on her mental well-being. Since horses are herd animals, they truly suffer when they are alone. Fortunately, after four to six weeks, a marked improvement was observed in Sternchen. She appeared much more balanced and took the stall rest in stride.

She bravely endured the two months of isolation without her equine companions. The owner definitely attributes this positive development to the use of hemp oil, since the first flare-up occurred five years ago and, without CBD, she was nowhere near as quick to recover back then as she was this time.

The mare will continue to receive the oil as a preventive measure so that she can better cope with the situation should it happen again.

Case Study #3: Irritated Paws in Dogs

Does this sound familiar? Your dog is constantly licking its paws. When dog owners notice this warning sign, it shouldn’t always be taken lightly—especially if the paws are so sore from all the licking that the dog can barely walk. Unfortunately, certain dog breeds are more prone to this condition. These include bulldogs, Labradors, and boxers.

Amigo, an 8-year-old bulldog, was brought in for treatment in August 2023 due to a long-standing lameness.

After observing his gait and performing a physical examination, crepitus was detected during extension and flexion of the elbows. This can be attributed to age-related osteoarthritis. His paws were sore, cracked, and, most notably, red and oozing. According to the owner, Amigo is allergic to various things. Amigo also seemed somewhat lethargic.

In addition to laser therapy, which also aids in wound healing, CBD in the form of CBD oil was administered immediately following the first physical therapy session.

How CBD Has Changed Amigo's Life Through Physical Therapy

Amigo has been taking CBD oil for a good two months now. His sore spots are no longer bright red like they were at the beginning. His urge to chew and bite himself has decreased significantly. Overall, it’s safe to say that the CBD oil has had a very positive effect. Amigo is much more lively and eager to run again, and he’s much more alert.

Conclusion

CBD is a valuable supplement to physical therapy for dogs and horses

The real-life examples shared by Laura Wäbs of Zweitakt Tierphysio highlight the great potential of CBD for both dogs and horses—a natural solution for body, mind, and soul!
