Loading Horses – A Stress-Free Trip in the Trailer

At some point, almost every horse faces this situation: it has to be loaded into a trailer. After all, how else would you get to a competition or the equine clinic? However, loading a horse into a trailer can be quite a challenge—for both the animal and the owner. To ensure this process is as stress-free and safe as possible for everyone involved, thorough preparation and extensive training are essential.

In this post, you’ll learn step by step how to successfully load your horse into the trailer and what else can help you along the way!

Loading a Horse into a Trailer – Step-by-Step Instructions

If you're planning to transport your horse in a trailer from point A to point B, you should first practice loading it thoroughly.

1. The most important requirement: Be well prepared!

It is important that the horse feels comfortable and that the owner is well prepared. A properly fitting halter ensures safety, and depending on the weather, a light blanket can provide additional comfort. Choose a quiet location and a day with good weather to avoid unnecessary stress. The owner should wear sturdy footwear to maintain a stable footing and prevent injuries. It can also be very helpful to have a second person there for support. Be careful not to ask too much of your horse. Take your time to avoid unnecessary stress and plan several short sessions of 10 to 20 minutes each.

2. Get your horse used to the trailer

Before things get serious, the horse should be given a chance to get used to the trailer in a relaxed setting. An ideal way to do this is to park the trailer with the doors open in the paddock so your horse can take a look at it and get a feel for it at its own pace.

After a few days, you can also start gradually introducing your horse to the trailer. You’ve taken the first step when your horse is ready to step onto the ramp with its front hooves. Praise your horse for its cooperation—either with words, petting, or small treats, such as the vegan nacani CBD snacks, which not only have a calming effect but can also make training more effective.

3. Step onto the loading area for the first time

Once the horse is standing relaxed at the ramp, you can encourage it to step fully into the trailer. It’s important not to rush it—the horse should enter at its own pace. You can also attach a lead rope to the trailer as an additional guide and aid. If the horse is standing calmly and composed on the loading area, don’t overwhelm it right away. Feel free to let it step back down immediately the first few times so it can internalize that nothing bad will happen to it. Repeat this process over and over, taking a small step further each time—until you reach the point where the tailgate and the ramp can be closed. Here, too, praise and rewards build trust and create positive associations.

4. Safe unloading takes practice, too!

Unloading is just as important as loading. Make sure the horse doesn’t stumble to avoid injury or panic. Don’t open the tailgate until the horse is standing calmly, and guide it slowly and carefully backward out of the trailer. Ideally, it should remain in a stable position before walking down the ramp. Patience and calm are key here. If someone is helping you with the training, they can also stand to the side so they can intervene if necessary.

5. Practice makes perfect

To ensure your horse stays relaxed in the long run, regular practice is essential. Repeat the loading process in various situations and at different locations to help your horse get used to different circumstances. The more familiar your horse becomes with the routine, the more relaxed it will be over time. Eventually, loading will become second nature—without any stress or fuss.

Loading horses into the trailer – Supporting training with CBD

With patience, consistency, and positive reinforcement, loading will become a safe and stress-free routine for you and your horse.

CBD offers many benefits for horses and can also be a helpful aid when loading them, especially for nervous or particularly skittish horses. Administered as a treat in the form of CBD snacks or as an oil, CBD’s calming effect can help reduce stress and help the horse approach new situations with greater ease. It can also provide natural calm during longer trips.

It’s important to start giving CBD early on, as it takes some time to take effect. You can find out how much CBD your animal needs using our dosage calculator. If you compete in tournaments, be sure to stop administering CBD about 10 days before a tournament, as CBD is unfortunately only permitted during training—and not during competition—according to the Anti-Doping and Medication Control Rules (ADMR) of the German Equestrian Federation (FN).
